About The Texas Lyceum
The Texas Lyceum brings together diverse leaders from across the state of Texas to focus on state and national issues through public forums, publications and meetings of their board of directors.
Kelly Overley, vice chancellor for Institutional Advancement and chief operating officer of the Texas Tech Foundation, and Alicia Knight, director of the Chancellor’s Council, were among the 20 new members appointed to the organization’s board during it’s Feb. 18 meeting in San Antonio.
“The Texas Lyceum provides an important forum for exploring major issues facing our state and nation,” said Overley. “I am honored to help continue this organization’s commitment to serving Texans.”
Established in 1980, the Texas Lyceum takes its name from the ancient Greek meeting place where Aristotle and fellow philosophers met to debate and exchange ideas.
Members of the group are selected based on professional achievement, civic contribution and leadership. A total of 96 men and women serve staggered, three-year terms on the board of directors.
Former members of the Texas Lyceum who have continued in public service include: former President George W. Bush, Senator Kay Bailey Hutchinson, Governor Rick Perry, U.S. District Judge Vanessa Gilmore, Texas Supreme Court Justices Don Willett and Dale Wainwright, Houston Mayor Bill White and former Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings.
“Educating and developing well-rounded leaders is central to the ongoing work of the Texas Lyceum,” said Knight. “I appreciate this opportunity to better understand the dynamic challenges currently facing our communities.”
Other members of the Texas Tech University System staff currently serving on the Texas Lyceum board include Juan Muñoz, Texas Tech University vice president of Institutional Diversity, Equity, and Community Engagement and vice provost for Faculty and Undergraduate Academic Affairs, who serves on the executive board of the organization.
