About ConocoPhillips
ConocoPhillips is a Fortune 100 company operating in nearly 40 countries worldwide.
To date, ConocoPhillips and its subsidiaries have given more than $5 million to advance academic programs at Texas Tech.
The half-million dollar donation will benefit a variety of engineering and business programs with the largest allocations funding the SPIRIT Scholars Program, ConocoPhillips Academic Success Bridge Program and the new Rawls College of Business Building.
“We are fortunate to have such a loyal corporate partner as ConocoPhillips,” said Texas Tech University President Guy Bailey. “So many opportunities for students and graduates open up when a university receives such outstanding support as Texas Tech has from them, both in funding and hiring.”
Tom Mathiasmeier, senior vice president, ConocoPhillips Gas & Power, said his company is pleased to have such a strong partnership with Texas Tech University.
“I am proud ConocoPhillips is able to continue our financial contribution to Texas Tech University,” he said. “We recognize that today’s students are tomorrow’s leaders and we have a responsibility to provide support and help prepare them for the future.
“In addition, ConocoPhillips is happy to continue with our second installment of funding toward the construction of the new building for the Rawls College of Business. We believe our support will further enhance Texas Tech’s ability to attract new students and continue to develop top talent for the many companies who actively recruit Tech graduates.”
Since 2007, the SPIRIT Scholars Program has provided scholarship support for a total of 39 engineering, business and geoscience students at Texas Tech University. The program underscores the ConocoPhillips core values of Safety, People, Integrity, Responsibility, Innovation and Teamwork (SPIRIT).
Funds from ConocoPhillips’ gift will also support the ConocoPhillips Academic Success Bridge Program in the Whitacre College of Engineering. The ConocoPhillips Academic Success Bridge Program provides college preparation and academic support services designed to ease the college transition for freshman engineering students.
In addition, the gift will support the new, $70 million Rawls College of Business building scheduled to begin construction in October 2009. Designs for the 145,000-square-foot building call for student-centered learning spaces and an integrated use of technology.
