Former student regent, Dr. Ebtesam Attaya “Sam” Islam, is a third year medical student at Texas Tech University Health Science Center and currently the vice president of her class.

Islam earned her Bachelor of Science degree in biology with a double minor in computer science and chemistry from Texas Tech University in 1998. She went on to earn her Doctor of Philosophy in cell and molecular biology from the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Biomedical Sciences in 2005.

Islam is a member of the American Medical Association, Texas Medical Association and Internal Medicine and Surgery Club. She also served as co-president of the Graduate School Association and vice president of the Biotechnology Club.

Islam and her husband, Sameer, have one daughter, Noura, who keeps them very busy.
